What is the Biblical Meaning of 'Poor in Spirit'?

The first blessing Jesus spoke of in the beatitudes is the "poor in Spirit". (Matthew 5:3) The result of this blessing is becoming the owner of the kingdom of heaven. We should really be concerned with the meaning of being "poor in spirit."

While Luke records this blessing just as being 'poor' (Luke 6:20), Matthew specifically adds the word 'in spirit' (Matthew 5:3). "Becoming spiritually poor" means recognizing your spiritual bankruptcy before God. It is to be destitute -admitting the fact that you cannot do anything about your salvation.(Epesians 2:8)

To receive God's salvation and become the owner of His kingdom, the first step is to come to God humbly, admitting your utter spiritual poverty before Him.
